AIIMS CRE Typing Skill Test — Quick Facts

The AIIMS CRE Typing Skill Test is the mandatory skill assessment in the Combined Recruitment Examination for administrative and clerical posts across AIIMS institutions in India. AIIMS conducts a unified CRE cycle covering multiple posts: Junior Administrative Assistant (JAA), Senior Administrative Assistant (SAA), Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Upper Division Clerk (UDC), Data Entry Operator (DEO), Coding Clerk, and Junior Medical Records Officer (JMRO). Different posts share different typing thresholds, but the same 15-minute test window and error methodology apply across the CRE. Candidates who clear the written examination must clear the typing skill test to receive a final appointment.

For LDC, UDC, JAA, and SAA posts, English typing requires 35 WPM (10,500 KDPH) and Hindi typing requires 30 WPM (9,000 KDPH). For DEO Grade A, the requirement is different: 8,000 KDPH English only (approximately 2,000 keystrokes in 15 minutes). DEO does not offer a Hindi option. The 15-minute test duration is longer than most Central government typing tests (10 minutes for SSC CHSL, KVS, EMRS), which changes pacing strategy. Longer duration means fatigue matters more, and mistakes compound across a wider passage.

AIIMS CRE applies a distinctive Full mistake penalty that separates it from SSC-style tests. Each Full mistake (omitted word, wrong word, spelling error, extra word) deducts 50 keystrokes or 10 words from the gross count. Half mistakes follow the standard 0.5-word deduction. The 10-word penalty per Full mistake is severe: five wrong words alone deduct 50 words, which at 35 WPM English represents 1.4 minutes of typing effort erased. The interface allows backspace but shows no word highlighting, no error highlighting, and no auto-scrolling. Candidates must manually manage their reading position across the 15-minute passage.

This page covers the complete AIIMS CRE typing test: the post-specific speed requirements (35/30 WPM for LDC-UDC-JAA-SAA, 8,000 KDPH English-only for DEO), the 15-minute duration, the 10-word Full mistake penalty, Half mistake categories, keyboard feature availability on exam day, Hindi font and layout rules, and a preparation plan for the longer format. Your typing language and post are set at the application stage. DEO candidates cannot switch to Hindi.

15-minute test duration

Longer than SSC CHSL, KVS, EMRS (10 minutes). Fatigue and pacing matter across the extended window.

Full mistake = −10 words

Each wrong word costs 10 words from your gross count. Severe penalty vs SSC's 1-word deduction.

DEO is English-only

DEO Grade A requires 2,000+ keystrokes English (8,000 KDPH). No Hindi option for DEO.

Speed Required

Net speed for AIIMS CRE (LDC/UDC/JAA/SAA) equals gross WPM minus error deductions across the 15-minute window. Gross WPM equals total keystrokes typed divided by 5 divided by 15 (minutes). Full mistakes deduct 10 words (50 keystrokes) each. Half mistakes deduct 0.5 word each. Net speed must reach 35 WPM (English) or 30 WPM (Hindi). DEO Grade A uses a keystroke floor of 2,000 keystrokes in 15 minutes (8,000 KDPH).

35 WPM equals 10,500 KDPH (English) and 30 WPM equals 9,000 KDPH (Hindi). DEO Grade A requires 8,000 KDPH English (2,000 keystrokes in 15 minutes). If your practice platform measures in KDPH, train to 12,000+ KDPH (LDC-UDC English) or 10,000+ KDPH (Hindi) or 9,000+ KDPH (DEO) to build a buffer above the qualifying line.

Interface — What Is Allowed and What Is Not

The AIIMS CRE typing interface allows backspace but has no word highlighting, no live error highlighting, and no auto-scrolling. Candidates must manually manage their reading position across the 15-minute passage. The interface shows a passage on the left and an input area on the right. Manual scrolling is required if the passage extends beyond the visible area.

How Errors Are Counted — Full and Half Mistakes

The AIIMS CRE error system deducts 10 words (50 keystrokes) per Full mistake and 0.5 word per Half mistake. The 5% error limit applies to gross word count. At 525 gross words (LDC-UDC English at 35 WPM for 15 minutes), you can afford roughly 2-3 Full mistakes before the 10-word-each penalty pushes net speed below 35 WPM. Half mistakes remain at 0.5 word deduction each.

FULL MISTAKES — 1 word each

Wrong word typed

Omitted word (word skipped)

Additional word typed (extra unscripted)

Spelling error in any word

Repeated word

Incomplete word (stopped mid-word)

HALF MISTAKES — 0.5 word each

Missing space between words

Extra space between words

Wrong capitalisation

Punctuation error

Transposed adjacent words

Paragraph spacing error

The Net-Speed Formula

net-wpm-formula

Gross WPM = Total keystrokes typed ÷ 5 ÷ 15 minutes (LDC-UDC-JAA-SAA)

Full mistake penalty = 10 words (50 keystrokes) each

Half mistake penalty = 0.5 word each

Net WPM = Gross WPM − error deductions

Qualifying (LDC/UDC/JAA/SAA): Net WPM ≥ 35 (English) or ≥ 30 (Hindi)=

Qualifying (DEO): 2,000+ keystrokes in 15 minutes (8,000 KDPH, English only)

Net speed is calculated to two decimal places. AIIMS CRE's 10-word Full mistake penalty is more severe than SSC-style 1-word deductions. Three wrong words at 35 WPM cost 30 words, which is 51 seconds of typing effort erased. Accuracy discipline matters more here than raw speed.

Net WPM

30.3 ✗ FAIL

At 35 WPM gross over 15 minutes you type 525 gross words. Three Full mistakes (3 × 10 = 30 words deducted) plus 15 Half mistakes (15 × 0.5 = 7.5 words) = 37.5 words deducted. Net = 525 − 37.5 = 487.5 words = 32.5 WPM. Fails the 35 WPM cutoff. Three Full mistakes alone destroy the pass.

Category-Wise Error Limits

AIIMS CRE has no category-based error relaxation on the typing skill test. The 5% error limit and speed thresholds apply to all candidates regardless of category. Category relaxation applies only to the written examination cut-offs, not to the typing skill test threshold.

All AIIMS CRE candidates need the same 35 WPM English or 30 WPM Hindi net speed (LDC-UDC-JAA-SAA) or 2,000+ keystrokes English (DEO). No SC/ST/OBC relaxation on the typing test. Same standards apply across categories.

Hindi Font Options

AIIMS CRE accepts Mangal Inscript (Unicode) for Hindi typing on the exam interface. DEO Grade A does not offer a Hindi option. Confirm layout from your admit card. AI Typing serves Mangal Inscript (Unicode) for Hindi practice.

Font / LayoutKeyboard LogicBest Suited For

Mangal (Unicode)

Inscript keyboard layout

Standard Unicode Hindi. Works on all AIIMS CRE centres without font installation. AI Typing serves this layout.

Mangal Inscript is the standard Unicode Hindi layout used across AIIMS institutions. Practising Inscript builds transferable muscle memory for KVS, EMRS, NVS, and CBSE if you apply to multiple recruitments.

Before You Start Practising

Train for zero Full mistakes across the full 15-minute session. Each wrong word costs 10 words; the math punishes carelessness more than slow typing.

Practise 15-minute full-length passages, not 10-minute drills. Build sustained focus for the longer AIIMS duration. Fatigue is the underappreciated failure mode.

For DEO applicants: drill English exclusively at 9,000+ KDPH. There is no Hindi option and the keystroke floor (2,000 in 15 minutes) is a hard requirement.

For LDC-UDC-JAA-SAA English candidates: aim for 40 WPM gross to survive 2-3 Full mistake deductions and still clear 35 WPM net.

Manually track your reading position in the passage. Practise with printed passages where you must scroll or turn pages to build the reading-position discipline AIIMS demands.

On exam day: read the first 15-20 words before starting. The 15-minute duration rewards a slow, controlled start over a rushed opening.

Common Reasons People Fail

Underestimating the 10-word Full mistake penalty

AIIMS CRE deducts 10 words per Full mistake, not 1 word like SSC CHSL. Three wrong words alone erase 30 words of gross count. Candidates from SSC-style preparation build a habit of correcting misspellings mid-word, which the 15-minute AIIMS test punishes severely if uncorrected.

Pacing errors in 15-minute duration

Most Central government typing tests are 10 minutes. AIIMS CRE runs 15 minutes. Candidates who train on 10-minute passages hit their attention limit at 8-10 minutes and slow down in the final 5-7 minutes. Practise 15-minute full-length sessions to build sustained focus.

Assuming DEO has Hindi option

AIIMS CRE DEO Grade A is English-only. There is no Hindi track for DEO. Candidates strong in Hindi typing who apply for DEO must pivot to English preparation immediately or apply for LDC-UDC-JAA-SAA where Hindi is an option.

Manually scrolling without a plan

AIIMS interface has no auto-scroll. Candidates who type at 35 WPM and forget to scroll lose 5-10 seconds looking for their position. Plan scroll pauses every 2-3 minutes into your typing rhythm rather than reactively scrolling when the passage ends.

Half mistakes compounding across 15 minutes

The longer 15-minute window means more Half mistakes in absolute count than a 10-minute test. Twenty spacing errors that would fit within a 10-minute test's 17.5-unit budget compound differently across the AIIMS 525-word gross count with the severe Full-mistake penalty.
