What Is a Hindi Typing Test?

1

A Hindi typing test gives you a Devanagari passage and a countdown. You type it using your configured Hindi keyboard layout. When time runs out, the platform measures your WPM and accuracy using both the 5-character formula and the word-count formula.

2

Hindi typing runs on two keyboard layouts. Inscript maps keys to Devanagari by phonetic position, is the Unicode standard, and works natively on every modern OS. Remington (Kruti Dev) mirrors the old Hindi typewriter arrangement and is common in environments that require Kruti Dev fonts. Install the correct input method and verify it before your first session.

3

Hindi words contain vowel diacritics (matras) that each need a separate keystroke after the base consonant. Each word costs more keypresses than its English equivalent, which is why backspace control matters more here. Stopping mid-word to fix a matra error costs more time than the wrong-word penalty.

Both WPM Formulas

The 5-character result and the word-count result appear side by side after every test.

7 Durations

1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 minutes. Same result card at every length.

Correct Hindi words go green, wrong ones go red as you type. Auto-scroll keeps your position in view.

Full Result Breakdown

Gross WPM, Net WPM, accuracy, error %, backspace count, consistency score and a WPM chart over time.

Backspace Control

Full, within-word only, or disabled. Disabling backspace hits harder in Hindi, where matra errors interrupt rhythm more than any other mistake type.

Tips

How to Get Faster at Hindi Typing

Eight changes that move your score, ranked by impact

01

Tip 01

Choose One Layout and Commit

Pick Inscript or Remington and do not switch. The two layouts share almost no key positions, and time on the wrong one does not transfer. Verify which layout you need, install it, and practice only on that.

02

Tip 02

Drill Matras Before Full Words

The vowel diacritics (ा ि ी ु ू े ै ो ौ ं ः) cause most errors in Hindi typing. Spend the first five minutes of every session typing matra combinations until each one fires without thought. One session of focused matra drilling beats an hour of random passage practice.

03

Tip 03

Fix Accuracy Before Speed

Net WPM is Gross WPM minus error penalties. A 40 WPM typist with 10% errors lands below a 30 WPM typist with 0%. Put accuracy first. Speed follows once your fingers stop second-guessing each keystroke.

04

Tip 04

Type Through Matra Mistakes

Backspacing mid-word to fix a matra is the biggest speed killer in Hindi typing. Switch to Backspace Disabled mode and finish each word even when a matra is wrong. The wrong-word penalty is cheaper than the time you lose by stopping.

05

Tip 05

Drill Conjunct Consonants Separately

Characters like क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र each need multiple keystrokes and appear often in formal Hindi text. Isolate each one and type it 30–50 times until the sequence is automatic. Once in muscle memory, they stop costing you time.

06

Tip 06

Target the Words You Keep Missing

The Wrong Words list on your result card is the only feedback worth acting on. Type each word on that list ten times before your next session. Targeting actual errors produces more improvement than re-typing passages you already handle well.

07

Tip 07

Watch the Consistency Score

Low consistency means your WPM spikes early and fades fast. Stamina is the gap. Build duration over weeks: 5 minutes solid, then 10, then 15, until your speed holds flat across the full test.

08

Tip 08

Practice Daily, Not in Bulk

Hindi layout recall degrades fast with gaps. Fifteen focused minutes every day outperforms two hours once a week. Skip two days and the matra sequences that felt automatic start to hesitate again.
