The numbers explained
Two numbers appear after your test. Here is what each one means.
Formula 1
Raw speed, no penalty for errors. Every 5 keystrokes = 1 word.
Formula
total keystrokes ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
Example
300 keystrokes in 1 min → 300 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 = 60 Gross WPM
Formula 2
Speed after errors are deducted — how much of what you typed was correct.
Formula
correct keystrokes ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
Example
280 correct of 300 in 1 min → 280 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 = 56 Net WPM
Always track Net WPM. The gap between Gross and Net is your accuracy problem — close it before chasing higher speed.
Get faster
Five habits that move the number.
1
Type slower until you can hold under 2% errors, then push pace. Speed follows accuracy. Chase WPM first and you practice mistakes, not speed.
2
Left fingers on A S D F, right on J K L ; — every key is one reach away. Return to home row after each keystroke. For most people this is the single biggest speed gain.
3
Looking down breaks your reading flow and costs 10–20 WPM. Cover your hands with a cloth to force it. It feels slow for a week, then clicks.
4
15–20 minutes daily beats two hours on Sunday. Muscle memory builds through repetition over days, not volume in a single sitting.
5
Most people fumble 3–5 keys. Check the wrong-word list after each test, find the pattern, and drill those keys. Targeted repetition beats general practice.
Where do you stand
After your typing speed test, use this table to read your WPM result in context.
WPM ranges — what they mean
Under 20 WPM
Beginner
Hunt-and-peck typing. Focus on home row position first.
20 – 40 WPM
Below average
Functional but slow. 15 min daily practice adds 5 WPM per week.
40 – 60 WPM
Average
Comfortable for most office work. Room to grow.
60 – 80 WPM
Above average
Faster than most adults. Accuracy likely above 95%.
80 – 100 WPM
Fast
Top 10% of typists. Strong touch-typing habits.
100+ WPM
Professional
Stenographers, competitive typists, experienced devs.
Average WPM by profession
Data entry operator
60 – 80 WPM
Software developer
50 – 80 WPM
Content writer

40 – 60 WPM
Government clerk (SSC)
35 – 40 WPM
Average office worker
38 – 45 WPM
Government exam minimum: 35 WPM. SSC CHSL, court clerks, and railway data entry roles require 35–40 Net WPM with 95%+ accuracy. Take this free WPM test daily to track your progress toward that target.
Why it matters
You cannot improve what you do not measure. A free typing speed test gives you a precise WPM number — not a feeling. Run the test, write down your score, and check it again in two weeks.
Most people overestimate their accuracy. The online typing speed test shows exact error rate and wrong words — so you know which keys to drill before bad habits get locked in.
SSC CHSL, railway, and court clerk exams have strict WPM cutoffs. Practicing on a timed typing test that mirrors exam conditions — fixed passage, countdown timer — is the most effective preparation.
Your recent results appear after every test. Watch net WPM climb and error rate drop over weeks. Consistency — not intensity — is what moves the score.
Common questions
WPM, typing speed, and how the test works.
WPM stands for Words Per Minute — the standard unit for measuring typing speed. One "word" equals 5 keystrokes, so longer words don't inflate or shrink your score. Every free typing speed test, including this one, uses the same 5-keystroke definition.
40–60 WPM covers most everyday work comfortably. 70–90 WPM is fast. Professional typists and developers usually exceed 90 WPM. Below 30 WPM means daily practice will move the number quickly. Use this online typing speed test regularly to track your progress.
Gross WPM is raw speed: total keystrokes ÷ 5 ÷ minutes, no penalty for errors. Net WPM subtracts errors, so it shows your usable speed. Net WPM is the number that matters — it is what most government exam typing tests measure.
Prioritize accuracy first — speed follows once muscle memory takes over. Keep fingers on home row (ASDF / JKL;), stop looking at the keyboard, and practice 15–20 minutes a day. Short daily sessions beat long irregular ones.
Yes — completely free, no account needed. Take the WPM test as many times as you want in English or Hindi. Results are shown instantly after each test.
Pick a test duration (1, 2, 3, or 5 minutes), choose a passage or paste your own text, and start typing. Your gross WPM, net WPM, accuracy, and error rate appear the moment you finish. No login, no setup — just open the typing speed checker and type.
