What Is an English Typing Test?

1

A typing test gives you a passage and a countdown. You type it. When time runs out, the platform measures your speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy as a percentage of correctly typed words.

2

This platform shows two WPM formulas side by side. The 5-character formula treats every 5 keystrokes as one word (the standard for raw output benchmarks). The word formula counts space-separated words, which tracks closer to real writing speed. Seeing both tells you which measure you are optimizing for.

3

Backspace use has its own counter because a high backspace rate hides slow forward progress. You can look fine on raw keystrokes while barely advancing through the passage. Practicing with backspace off trains you to push through mistakes instead of stopping at each one.

Tips

How to Get Faster

Eight changes that move your score, ranked by impact

01

Tip 01

Stop Looking at the Keyboard

Every glance at the keyboard breaks the reading loop and costs roughly half a second per word. Cover the keys with a cloth for a week. Your speed drops at first. Push through it. The gain is permanent once the habit breaks.

02

Tip 02

Fix Accuracy Before Speed

Net WPM equals Gross WPM minus error penalties. A typist at 45 Gross WPM with 8% errors lands below someone at 36 Gross WPM with 0%. Get accuracy above 95% first. Speed follows once your fingers stop second-guessing each keystroke.

03

Tip 03

Type Through Mistakes

Switch to Backspace Disabled mode and keep moving. One wrong word costs less than three pauses. Within three or four sessions the reflex to stop and correct fades.

04

Tip 04

Target the Words You Keep Missing

The Wrong Words list on your result card is the only feedback worth acting on after a test. Type each word on that list ten times before your next session. Re-typing passages you already handle well produces almost no improvement.

05

Tip 05

Read Two Words Ahead

Your eyes should land on the next word while your fingers finish the current one. Use the live word highlight here to train it: keep your gaze a beat ahead of your position in the passage.

06

Tip 06

Return to Home Row After Every Reach

Left fingers rest on A S D F, right on J K L ;. Return after every reach. The unconscious search for keys slows most typists after the first minute. Home row eliminates that search.

07

Tip 07

Watch the Consistency Score

Low consistency means you start fast and fade. Stamina is the gap, not technique. Extend test duration over weeks: 5 minutes solid, then 10, then 15, until your WPM holds flat across the full test.

08

Tip 08

Practice Daily, Not in Bulk

Fifteen minutes every day beats two hours on Sunday. Muscle memory degrades fast with gaps. One focused 15-minute session five days a week is the minimum that keeps progress moving.
