The SPMCIL IGM Typing Skill Test is a mandatory qualifying stage in the Junior Office Assistant (Level B-3) recruitment at Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited, conducted at India Government Mint centres in Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Noida. SPMCIL prints Indian currency and mints coins, so recruitment cycles are irregular and vacancy counts small. Candidates who clear the written examination must clear this 10-minute typing test to receive a final appointment. The typing test does not add to merit; it filters candidates who cannot meet the office-standard speed.
English candidates must reach a net speed of 40 WPM (12,000 KDPH). Hindi candidates must reach 30 WPM (9,000 KDPH). SPMCIL's 40 WPM English requirement is higher than SSC CHSL (35 WPM), KVS (35 WPM), and most other Central government typing tests. Only a few exams like SPMCIL and Delhi Police HCM demand 40 WPM at the entry-clerk level. Both tests run for 10 minutes. Errors follow the Full and Half mistake system: Full mistakes (wrong word, omitted word, spelling error) each deduct 1 word from gross. Half mistakes (spacing errors, capitalisation, punctuation) each deduct 0.5 word.
The SPMCIL interface uses word-by-word red highlighting during the test to flag errors in real time, but backspace is restricted. You cannot freely delete text once a word has been submitted. This word-lock behaviour separates SPMCIL from exams like EMRS JSA and DDA JSA where backspace is fully open. Every mistake you commit becomes a locked-in error. The interface shows you the error immediately, but you cannot go back and fix it. Candidates who train with unrestricted backspace develop reflexes that fail here.
This page covers the complete SPMCIL IGM typing test: the 40/30 WPM speed requirements and net speed formula, the 5% error ceiling with concrete numbers, Full and Half mistake categories that IGM evaluators use, keyboard feature availability on exam day, the word-lock backspace rule, Hindi font and layout rules, and a preparation plan for the 10-minute format. Your typing language (English or Hindi) is set at the recruitment stage based on your applied post preference. Hindi candidates type in Mangal Inscript (Unicode); confirm your keyboard layout from the admit card before beginning practice.
40 WPM English required
Higher than SSC CHSL (35 WPM). Candidates from SSC prep must add 5 WPM to their target speed.
Restricted backspace
You cannot freely delete submitted words. Errors get flagged live but cannot be corrected after a word is entered.
Live red highlighting
The interface flags errors in real time. You see mistakes as they happen, but the word-lock keeps them counted.

Net speed for SPMCIL IGM equals gross WPM minus error deductions. Gross WPM equals total keystrokes typed divided by 5 divided by 10 (minutes). Full mistakes deduct 1 word; Half mistakes deduct 0.5 word. Your net speed must reach 40 WPM (English) or 30 WPM (Hindi) to qualify. The 40 WPM English threshold is higher than SSC CHSL and KVS.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
English Speed | 40 WPM net |
English KDPH | 12,000 KDPH |
English Passage | ~2,100 characters (10 min) |
Hindi Speed | 30 WPM net |
Hindi KDPH | 9,000 KDPH |
Hindi Passage | ~1,575 characters (10 min) |
Test Duration | 10 minutes (both languages) |
40 WPM equals 12,000 KDPH (keystrokes per hour) for English; 30 WPM equals 9,000 KDPH for Hindi. If your practice platform measures in KDPH, train to 13,000+ KDPH (English) or 10,000+ KDPH (Hindi) to build a comfortable buffer above the SPMCIL qualifying line.
The SPMCIL IGM typing interface uses word-by-word red highlighting to flag typing errors in real time. Backspace is restricted, meaning you cannot freely delete previously submitted words. The interface shows a passage on the left and an input area on the right. Passages appear in a fixed viewing pane; manual scrolling is required if the passage extends beyond the visible area.
| Function | Status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
Backspace | Disabled | Restricted after word submission. Cannot freely delete previously typed words. Word-lock activates on spacebar press. |
Arrow keys | Disabled | Cannot navigate back through typed text using arrow keys. |
Delete key | Disabled | Forward deletion not available on the exam interface. |
Tab key | Required | Press Tab to begin a new paragraph as indicated in the passage. |
Live error highlighting | Allowed | Errors flagged in real time with word-by-word red highlighting. Cannot correct after word-lock. |
Copy / Paste | Disabled | Clipboard functions blocked entirely on the exam interface. |
Spell-check / AutoCorrect | Disabled | Autocorrect and browser spell-check turned off for the exam interface. |
Passage scroll | Allowed | Candidates must manually scroll the passage if it extends beyond the visible window. |
The SPMCIL IGM error limit is 5% of gross words typed. At 400 gross words (English, 10 minutes at 40 WPM), you can afford 20 error units before crossing the threshold. Full mistakes count as 1 error unit; Half mistakes count as 0.5 units. Live red highlighting during the test warns you about errors, but restricted backspace prevents you from correcting them freely.
FULL MISTAKES — 1 word each
Wrong word typed
Omitted word (word skipped)
Additional word typed
Spelling error
Repeated word
Incomplete word (stopped mid-word)
HALF MISTAKES — 0.5 word each
Missing space between words
Extra space between words
Wrong capitalisation (uppercase/lowercase error)
Punctuation error (wrong or missing punctuation)
Transposed adjacent words
Paragraph spacing error (wrong line break)
The Net-Speed Formula
net-wpm-formula
Gross WPM = Total keystrokes typed ÷ 5 ÷ 10 minutes
Error deductions = Full mistakes × 1 + Half mistakes × 0.5
Net WPM = Gross WPM − Error deductions
Qualifying: Net WPM ≥ 40 (English) or ≥ 30 (Hindi)
Net speed is calculated to two decimal places. A net speed of 39.99 WPM for English fails; 40.00 WPM passes. SPMCIL's 40 WPM English threshold is 5 WPM higher than SSC CHSL. Candidates preparing from SSC-style content must recalibrate their speed buffer.

At 40 WPM gross over 10 minutes you type 400 gross words. The 5% ceiling allows 20 error units. Ten wrong words (10 Full = 10 units) plus 20 spacing errors (20 Half = 10 units) = 20 units, exactly at the limit. One additional half mistake disqualifies you.
SPMCIL IGM has no category-based error relaxation on the typing test. The 5% error limit and 40/30 WPM thresholds apply to all candidates regardless of category (UR, OBC, SC, ST). Reserved category relaxation applies only to the written examination cut-offs, not to the typing qualification threshold.
All candidates need the same 40 WPM English or 30 WPM Hindi net speed. No SC/ST/OBC relaxation on the typing test. Train to the same 40/30 WPM standard regardless of your category.
SPMCIL IGM accepts Mangal Inscript (Unicode) for Hindi typing on the exam interface. Confirm the layout from your admit card before beginning practice. AI Typing serves Mangal Inscript (Unicode) for Hindi practice, matching the SPMCIL interface.
| Font / Layout | Keyboard Logic | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|
Mangal (Unicode) | Inscript keyboard layout | Standard Unicode Hindi. Works on all SPMCIL exam centres without font installation. AI Typing serves this layout. |
Mangal Inscript is the standard Unicode Hindi input method. Practise with the Inscript layout from your first session. Switching layouts within 2 weeks of the exam destroys keyboard muscle memory and slows speed by 5 to 8 WPM.
Train to 45 WPM gross (English) or 34 WPM gross (Hindi), not the exam cutoff. Error deductions pull net speed below gross, so the 5 WPM buffer is necessary at the 40 WPM SPMCIL threshold.
Practise with backspace disabled after spacebar. AI Typing's SPMCIL mode enforces word-lock so your reflexes match the actual exam interface.
Track error percentage every session, not just speed. At 45 WPM gross with 8% errors, net is 41.4 WPM (fine). At 42 WPM gross with 7% errors, net is 39.06 WPM (fail at 40 WPM cutoff).
Learn to ignore live red highlights during practice. Every second spent reacting to a flagged error is a second lost from advancing in the passage.
For Hindi, drill Mangal Inscript number and symbol positions. Half mistakes from wrong punctuation add up faster than candidates expect at 30 WPM.
On exam day: read the first 10 words before starting. The first 30 seconds set your rhythm. Starting too fast increases errors that word-lock prevents you from fixing.
Missing the 40 WPM buffer
SPMCIL demands 40 WPM English, not 35 WPM. Candidates from SSC CHSL background practise at 35-38 WPM and fail here. Train to a gross speed of 45 WPM (English) or 34 WPM (Hindi) to keep net speed above the SPMCIL cutoff after 5% error deductions.
Backspace habit from free-backspace exams
Candidates who trained on EMRS JSA or DDA JSA develop a habit of correcting errors mid-word. On SPMCIL, backspace is word-locked. Once you press spacebar, the word is submitted and cannot be corrected. Train exclusively on word-lock mode from day one.
Panicking at red highlights
Live error highlighting shows a red mark the moment you make a mistake. Candidates freeze trying to fix errors that cannot be fixed. Ignore the red highlight. Keep typing. The error is already counted; slowing down only adds more errors.
Half mistakes hitting the 5% ceiling silently
The red highlight flags wrong words clearly, but spacing errors and capitalisation issues get flagged less visibly. Twenty spacing errors alone use 10 error units of the 20-unit budget at 40 WPM English. Half mistakes accumulate faster than Full mistakes at this speed.
No word-lock practice
Most typing platforms allow free backspace. SPMCIL does not. Practising on unrestricted platforms builds reflexes that fail on exam day. Use AI Typing's SPMCIL mode which locks backspace after spacebar to match the actual interface.
