The UPPSC RO/ARO typing test is conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission for Review Officer and Assistant Review Officer posts. Only ARO (Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari) candidates must clear the typing test — RO (Samiksha Adhikari) is fully exempt. Hindi typing is the mandatory qualifying component. English typing is optional and preferential — it does not disqualify a candidate but may be considered favourably. This is a pass/fail qualifying test; marks are not added to the written examination merit list.
The Hindi typing test requires 25 WPM net over 5 minutes, covering approximately 125 words. Net speed equals gross words typed minus error words, divided by 5. The 5% error relaxation applies only when a minimum of 125 words are typed — type fewer and no relaxation is granted. At 25 WPM over 5 minutes you type 125 words and can afford 6 error words. The English typing session follows the same 5-minute format at 25 WPM and is available for candidates who wish to demonstrate English proficiency alongside their mandatory Hindi score.
The rule most candidates miss: backspace works only within the current word. Once you press spacebar, that word is permanently locked — you cannot go back. This is fundamentally different from SSC CHSL or KVS where backspace works freely across the passage. Two Hindi layouts are accepted: KrutiDev 010 (Remington, non-Unicode) and Mangal Inscript (Unicode Inscript). Mangal Remington Gail is not available — only these two layouts are offered. On AI Typing, both English and Hindi sessions are supported with Mangal Inscript for Hindi practice.
This page covers the Hindi and English speed requirements, the word-locked backspace rule, the 5% conditional error relaxation, Hindi font options, interface rules, and a full preparation strategy for both language sessions.
Hindi Mandatory, English Optional
ARO candidates must clear Hindi typing at 25 WPM. English typing is optional and preferential — it does not disqualify but may be considered in selection. RO post is fully exempt from typing.
Backspace Locks After Spacebar
Backspace works only within the current word. Once you press spacebar, that word is permanently locked. This is the critical rule most candidates miss — especially those trained on SSC or KVS interfaces.
5% Errors — Only If 125 Words Typed
The 5% error relaxation applies only when 125 or more words are typed. Fewer than 125 words means no relaxation — every error counts. Type 130+ words for a safe qualification margin.

Backspace | Allowed within current word only |
Test Nature | Qualifying — Pass/Fail, not merit-based |
Hindi: net WPM = (words typed − error words) ÷ 5 minutes. The 5% error relaxation activates only when 125 or more words are typed. English: same 5-minute format at 25 WPM, optional and preferential — does not disqualify but may be noted favourably in selection.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
Hindi Speed (Net) | 25 WPM (mandatory) |
English Speed | 25 WPM (optional/preferential) |
Duration | 5 minutes per session |
Minimum Words | 125 words |
Error Limit | 5% of words typed |
Max Errors (at 125 words) | 6 error words |
Passage Repeat | Allowed if time remains |
25 WPM equals 7,500 KDPH for Hindi. Train at 30 WPM (9,000 KDPH) in both languages — the 5-minute format punishes slow starters and leaves no time to recover from a weak opening.
The UPPSC typing interface shows live error markers immediately on wrong key press. Backspace works only within the current word — spacebar permanently locks that word. Arrow keys and Delete are disabled. If time remains after completing the passage, it resets and can be retyped from the beginning.
| Function | Status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
Backspace | Allowed | Works within current word only — permanently locked after spacebar press |
Arrow Keys | Disabled | Left/Right arrow navigation is not available during the test |
Delete Key | Disabled | Delete key is not functional during the typing session |
Tab Key | Disabled | Tab key is disabled throughout the session |
Live Error Highlighting | Allowed | Visual error markers appear immediately on wrong key press |
Copy / Paste | Disabled | Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V are blocked |
Spell Check / AutoCorrect | Disabled | Browser spell-check and autocorrect are disabled |
Passage Repeat | Allowed | Passage resets if time remains after completion — additional words count toward total |
UPPSC uses a word-level error system for both Hindi and English sessions. Every error word reduces gross words by 1. The 5% error limit means a maximum of 6 error words out of 125 typed. Net WPM = (words typed − error words) ÷ 5. A candidate typing 125 words with 7 errors scores net 23.6 WPM — below the 25 WPM cutoff, not qualified on Hindi.
FULL MISTAKES — 1 word each
Wrong word typed (substitution)
Word omitted (skipped entirely)
Extra word inserted
Spelling error in a word
Word repeated unnecessarily
Incomplete word (cut short)
Wrong matra or vowel sign (Hindi)
HALF MISTAKES — 0.5 word each
Missing space between words
Extra space between words
Wrong capitalisation
Punctuation error
Wrong number or symbol
The Net-Speed Formula
net-wpm-formula
Gross WPM = Total words typed ÷ 5 minutes
Error Deduction = error words (max 5% of words typed, only if ≥125 words typed)
Net WPM = (Gross words − Error words) ÷ 5
Qualify if: Net WPM ≥ 25 (Hindi mandatory; English optional)
The 5% error relaxation is conditional — it applies only when 125 or more words are typed. At fewer than 125 words, all errors count with no relaxation. Net WPM is calculated to two decimal places; 24.99 does not qualify for Hindi.

Net WPM

125 words typed, 6 errors: net = 119 ÷ 5 = 23.8 WPM — fails. 132 words typed, 6 errors: net = 126 ÷ 5 = 25.2 WPM — qualifies. Type 130+ words to build a buffer so error deductions still leave you above 25 WPM net.
UPPSC does not publish separate error limits for OBC, SC, ST, or EWS candidates on the typing test. The 25 WPM threshold and 5% error relaxation apply uniformly across all categories. Category benefits apply to written examination marks and vacancy allocation, not to the typing qualifying threshold.
Unlike SSC CHSL where reserved category candidates get a wider 10% error ceiling versus 7% for UR, UPPSC applies the same 5% error limit and 25 WPM cutoff to every category. No relaxation on the typing test.
UPPSC accepts two Hindi keyboard layouts: KrutiDev 010 using the Remington (non-Unicode) layout, and Mangal Inscript using the Unicode Inscript layout. Mangal Remington Gail is not available in the exam interface. On AI Typing, Mangal Inscript is the supported layout for Hindi practice sessions.
| Font / Layout | Keyboard Logic | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|
Mangal Inscript | Unicode Inscript (standard government layout) | Candidates trained on Inscript keyboard; supported on AI Typing for practice |
KrutiDev 010 | Remington non-Unicode (traditional typewriter layout) | Candidates trained on Remington typewriter-style keyboard |
Pick one layout and train all sessions on it. Switching between KrutiDev and Inscript resets muscle memory for matra placement — a single layout switch on exam day can cost you 5–8 WPM.
Train Hindi at 30 WPM — so error deductions still leave you above 25 WPM net on exam day.
Practise on word-locked interfaces where backspace stops working after spacebar — not free-backspace interfaces.
Run full 5-minute timed sessions daily for both Hindi and English — the short format demands you reach speed from word one.
Track error word count every session. Target under 4 errors per 125 words (3.2%) so exam-day pressure still keeps you within the 5% ceiling.
Pick one Hindi layout — KrutiDev 010 or Mangal Inscript — and practise exclusively on it throughout preparation.
Prepare for the optional English session too — it takes minimal extra time and can be a differentiator in competitive selection cycles.
On exam day, use the 2-minute keyboard demo to warm up fingers on the actual exam keyboard — treat it as the first 2 minutes of your typing warmup, not a formality.
Using backspace after pressing spacebar
The single most common failure. Candidates trained on SSC CHSL or KVS press space, spot an error, and reach for backspace. The word is already locked — backspace does nothing. Train on word-locked interfaces before exam day so the habit breaks completely.
Typing fewer than 125 words and losing the error relaxation
The 5% limit activates only at 125 words typed. Type 118 words with 5 errors and no relaxation applies — net = (118 − 5) ÷ 5 = 22.6 WPM, not qualified. Always push past 125 words even if accuracy drops slightly — the relaxation is worth more than 5 extra cautious words.
Training at 25 WPM gross and failing after error deductions
25 WPM gross with 6 errors over 5 minutes = 119 net words = 23.8 WPM net — not qualified. You need 25 WPM net after deductions, not before. Train at 30 WPM so 6 errors still leave you above the cutoff: 150 − 6 = 144 net words = 28.8 WPM.
Skipping the optional English session
English typing is optional but preferential. In competitive cycles where many candidates clear Hindi at similar scores, English performance can influence selection. Candidates who prepare only Hindi miss a free advantage. Use the practice time on AI Typing to log 5-minute English sessions alongside Hindi.
Switching Hindi layouts between practice sessions
KrutiDev 010 and Mangal Inscript place matras on completely different keys. A candidate who practises on Inscript one week and KrutiDev the next arrives at the exam with split muscle memory. Pick one layout from day one and never switch.
