Keystrokes Per Hour
KPH counts every key press you make in one hour: letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation. It is the standard unit in private sector data entry job listings, BPO hiring, and several government department roles. KPH and KDPH (Key Depressions Per Hour) are the same metric with different names.

WPM measures how many 5-character groups you type per minute. It is the standard on typing platforms, job listings, and US/UK assessments. One "word" is 5 keystrokes. Multiply by 300 to get KPH.

Characters Per Minute
CPM is raw keystrokes per minute — equal to WPM × 5. Some court clerk roles and transcription jobs specify CPM in their requirements. CPM × 60 equals your KPH. If a job listing says "167 CPM minimum," that is 10,000 KPH or 33.3 WPM.

KPH per WPM
Data entry roles measure raw throughput, not word boundaries. A data entry operator typing insurance forms, billing sheets, or court records is evaluated on total keystrokes per hour, not word-group speed. WPM rounds keystrokes into 5-character groups, which can understate or overstate actual output depending on document type. KPH counts every character, space, and punctuation mark directly. BPO companies, banks, government departments, and LIC adopted KPH as their hiring metric because it gives a number that matches what operators produce on the job.

KPH
Keystrokes Per Hour
The primary metric for data entry hiring. Counts every individual key press across a full hour. Used by LIC, IBPS, India Post, BPO companies, and court data entry recruiters. Also identical to KDPH used in SSC and Railway exam notifications.

Words Per Minute
The global standard on typing platforms. One word = 5 keystrokes. Use WPM to practice on Monkeytype, TypeRacer, or VectorTyping, then convert to KPH to check against job requirements.

Characters Per Minute
Raw keystrokes per minute. Some transcription and court clerk roles specify CPM rather than KPH. CPM × 60 = KPH. If a listing says "167 CPM minimum," that is exactly 10,000 KPH.

KPS
Keystrokes Per Second
Keystrokes per second — a rhythm indicator. A candidate at 10,000 KPH averages 2.78 keys per second. If your KPS drops during a test, that is where your hesitation keys are. Use it to find slowdowns rather than as a target metric.
KPH ÷ 3600
Identifies hesitation patterns. A sudden drop in KPS mid-test reveals your weakest key zones.
Why this matters
If you practice in WPM and never convert, you will not know whether you meet the requirement until the hiring test.
LIC DEO requires 10,000 KPH. IBPS Clerk requires 8,000 KPH. BPO companies post 12,000–15,000 KPH. You practice on Monkeytype, TypeRacer, or 10FastFingers and see "35 WPM." Without converting, you cannot tell whether that meets the requirement.
IBPS Clerk requires 8,000 KPH. At 26 WPM you type 7,800 KPH, 200 below the cutoff. Tracking only WPM hides that gap. Check your KPH before assuming you are ready.
Entry-level data entry starts at 8,000 KPH. LIC DEO and standard BPO roles require 10,000 KPH. Senior BPO and specialist contracts start at 15,000 KPH. A single WPM target does not cover all three — check the specific KPH figure in each listing.
A 1-minute WPM test and a 10-minute data entry test produce different KPH numbers from the same typist. Fatigue and passage difficulty both pull KPH down over longer sessions. Always practice at the test duration specified in the job description.

Common mistakes
Candidates miss data entry roles because they trained for WPM when the test measures KPH, or practiced 1-minute tests for a 10-minute assessment.

Training in WPM, tested in KPH
Candidates hit 33 WPM on a typing platform and assume they meet a 10,000 KPH requirement. 33 WPM = 9,900 KPH — 100 short of the cutoff, with no buffer for test-day nerves or unfamiliar passages.
Fix:
If the role needs 10,000 KPH, train to 12,000+ KPH (40 WPM) consistently. The buffer absorbs fatigue and harder text.

Practicing on 1-minute tests, tested for 10 minutes
Short typing tests overstate your sustainable speed. A candidate who averages 40 WPM over 1 minute often drops to 34–36 WPM over 10 minutes due to fatigue and passage variety. LIC DEO uses a 10-minute test.
Fix:
Always practice at the exact test duration in the job description. If it says 10 minutes, do 10-minute sessions — not 1-minute sprints.

Treating KPH and KDPH as different requirements
Some candidates see "10,000 KPH" in a BPO listing and "10,000 KDPH" in an SSC notification and assume they are different standards. They are the same metric — KPH = KDPH = CPM × 60.
Fix:
KPH and KDPH are identical. Convert to WPM first, then compare across any job listing or exam notification.

Ignoring accuracy in favour of raw speed
Data entry roles hire for accuracy, not just speed. An operator typing 12,000 KPH with 5% errors produces less usable output than one typing 10,000 KPH at 99% accuracy. Most companies track error rates alongside KPH.
Fix:
Hit 98%+ accuracy first, then increase pace. Errors cost more in a data entry role than in a typing speed test — they cause re-entry and downstream data problems.

KPH stands for Keystrokes Per Hour — the total number of individual key presses you make in one hour of typing. Every character, space, punctuation mark, and number counts as one keystroke. It is the standard metric used in data entry job requirements, BPO hiring, and several government department roles.
Divide your total keystrokes by the test duration in minutes, then multiply by 60. Formula: KPH = (Total Keystrokes ÷ Minutes) × 60. For example, if you typed 1,500 keystrokes in 10 minutes: KPH = (1500 ÷ 10) × 60 = 9,000 KPH.

Yes. Every key press counts — letters, numbers, spaces, commas, full stops, and all punctuation. Backspace also registers as a keystroke in most counting methods, though it does not add to your net character output. Job listings that specify KPH are counting gross keystrokes unless stated otherwise.
Start with accuracy. Errors waste keystrokes without adding net output. Keep your hands on the home row (ASDF JKL;) and stop looking at the keyboard. Practice 20–30 minutes daily on timed tests. Target your weakest keys with finger drills. Once you reach 98%+ accuracy, increase your pace.
